Intrepid Journeys - Aotea Square

Awake with the stoners more like.

No prison for pot Dr Brash.

Listened to this chap for a couple of minutes didn't understand a single muttering word that came from his mouth.

The plan.

The .00000000001%...who were there.

Too lazy to pitch that bad boy.

The rich do not need saving however.

More booze? Prohibition?

Oil lobby.

Defacing US flag, anti-war, anti-anti-anti??

Say what?

Say what?

Occupy in dramatic action shot.

Anti-Hubbard sign.

Invoking Gandhi?

Group shot of the crowd.

Really?

Now they wish to liberate the University. From what precisely?
I had a half hour spare today waiting for a delivery to arrive for me at Smith & Caughey Queens Street, while I'm accidentally in town for a very quick trip, so around 2pm so I took up the Occupy challenge to go down to Aotea Square and have a look at the protest.

What I saw reinforced further that if these occupiers are the future of New Zealand and indeed the 99% then New Zealand is utterly poked. The pathetic heaving underclass is alive but not well in Aotea Square for sure.
I approached the area firstly underwhelmed with the size of, well everything. If it was a bloke in a bar and you had a pre-squeeze, it wouldn't be coming home with you. Too small.
On the plus side I do give them some credit that it all seemed very peaceful.
The stench of the unwashed was soon apparent, although in two days if the gas pipeline from Taranaki is not fixed, unwashed Auckland central residents could be everywhere.
These people aren't even Labour voters. They are worse than that. We are talking Alliance or Mana. Or even too stoned to vote.
I was not dressed in a suit which would be a sign of war. Given I had showered that morning and blonde it was quite apparent I was there on my Blackberry to take photos and perhaps I was the 1% enemy. Any competent protest movement would have at least questioned my presence. Alas not our Occupiers.
Now I'm not anti-weed. But it was soon evident that the non-violent, non-alcoholic protest was fuelled on dak. The rolling eyes of the 40 people I counted in the vicinity were proof they were either psychiatric patients, or stoned. Or perhaps both.
Trained in Management at University and with now extensive experience, I am qualified to provide some advice regarding. I would like to think if I was a pinko I could at least run a decent meaningful protest. Remember everyone these people are gaining sympathy from quasi-Labour MP Selwyn Pellett. I doubt Selwyn's actually gone there and seen quite what he's backing to receive a dividend from.
1. Your message must be consistent.
As evidenced by signs around below, "Occupy" is a mish-mash of New Zealand's degenerates. In other words, these are people that if as the middle classes were living next to you not only would you roll your eyes at, you would erect a bloody large fence so you didn't have to see them. We had Maori activists, the pro-cannabis lobby, anti-oil, anti-capitalism, hippies, students and a sign that suggested "calves are induced murder". Surely Gilda Kirkpatrick could have told you that about her high heels before you got to Aotea Square.

2. Your message must be on point.
A sign saying "no capital gains tax" belongs at a National or ACT Party meeting. "Tax evasion" only gets me excited enough to think I might want to actually join the protest.

3. Hot chicks.
Simply there were none. Laila Harre on her own recruited at least half the Alliance membership. She also provided the likes of Matthew Hooton with enough drooling sympathy to listen to the cause. There are no Laila's here but the feminist movement was represented by this sign.

4. Alcohol and drugs.
It's fine to provide weed to be smoked outside before arriving, but walking through the space drove me to drink and this was alcohol free. This young topless man (his pants fell down part way through a hoola hoop movement) asked me if I was over 20 and could go buy some alcohol.

Normally I would be flattered at least with the age thing, however his eyes suggested he was inbred or stoned. Either way I realised that Len may be too soft-cocked to allow degenerates who voted for him to be arrested for squatting in tents but I would be up for supplying liquor to a minor as well as public drinking. He later told Auckland council security in my presence that he was security for Occupy.
I suggest he won't be tomorrow when the idiot in charge reads this post. I have respectfully refrained from taking close up pictures identifying any of the others in the square apart from the speaker at the event, however will be doing them a favour identifying this moron so he can be ejected.
Len's Men (Supercity security) did discuss in my earshot what they would do about Occupy's security and concluded they couldn't do anything. Yes the occupiers have a security roster of their own, this guy pictured was actually on it. The problem is the longer this crap goes on the more the ratepayer is paying for it.
5. Hazards
I arrived completely sober. In the time I was there I almost slipped up twice on the steps. ACC may have had claims already from the stoned and unwashed. Occupying this space was dumb. It's out of the way, no one was around and it's no Wall Street. We could leave these halfwits there a year and it wouldn't matter. Well other than once it starts to rain the grass will be off.

6. Expansion
When building a business you need room to expand. Occupy can't, it's almost at capacity as the grassed area is capacity. Yet tents outnumber people present. Not good business planning. And it is pretty clear that the tents are not full so they are attempting to create a facade that the protest is much larger than it actually is. A bit like what Whaleoil referred to yesterday as "Un-occupied".

7. Other hazards
I found the one respectable person there who was sporting a pro-MMP badge. He looked like a student, was reasonably dressed and more importantly appeared literate and not stoned. I asked him where the protesters actually were as I pointed out there were more tents there than people. "Oh I live ten minutes away I don't stay here there's light pollution".
That is, at night the poor petals can't sleep as Queen St has too many lights.
In summary if these losers and degenerates want to get noise they should move and "go big".
Occupy Shortland Street.
It would be loud, rude, stop traffic and disrupt $700+ an hour lawyers and barristers getting to work. Which means Len would have to actually make a decision regarding. Handing over to Crusher would be the only option.
Aotea Square is nothing. It's like pissing in the ocean. Doesn't matter. If these hippies, dope smokers, Mana party members and fuckwit middle class kiddies want to make a statement pack up their middle class tents and occupy Shortland Street.
If you are gonna go.
Go big. Or go home. Which is it going to be Occupy?

41 Comments:
Some of those tents look like top-of-the-range mountaineering tents.
They are not cheap. http://www.macpac.co.nz/shop/en_nz/gear-and-clothing/tents/tents-mountain
Thanks for taking one for the team and venturing into the pit.
My spies have been making the observations that you recorded for posterity.
I think absence of publicity will make this protest wither and die, with the usual stink that accompanies decomposition.
The tents appear to be made by the very corporations that the protesters think are evil. If capitalism is evil and the tents are made in asian sweat shops using exploited labour shouldn't the protesters boycott these products?
So what exactly are you suggesting Cactus? I'm sure you would be just thrilled if they did decide to go on a rampage up Queen St.
Shouldn't you be happy that they are protesting peacefully?
Finally, I'm fairly sure that most protests are fueled by rage, in this case, I hope your impotent rage against the protesters keeps them going. After all, if the right wing blogosphere is against you, you must be doing something right or they wouldn't be worried enough to care.
Cheers
Alex
They have been wanting something to protest for ages. The Socialist Aotearoa and Mana party supporters are attempting to bring back the student protest culture from the 60s.
There is always that guy there that looks like Russell Brand, the Operation-whatever guy "Omar", the really blonde guy and those brothers that assaulted John Key. This is why we had 3 different national days of student action over the course of two weeks.
It is probably pretty good to have them in one place though so they aren't yelling in my ear at the University, doing that stupid "____'s rights are under attack, stand up fight back" chant, displaying those retarded, badly drawn signs attacking Stuart McCutcheon and damaging university property.
No drum circle?
@Bob
I'm not sure what the value of the tents has anything to do with. Are you trying to sell us one?
In regards to your number 2 sign I believe they are trying to equate
not having a capital gains tax with tax evasion, rather than supporting the two. The pillocks just can't communicate properly.
This is depressing. The thing is, there are issues you would think they would be conversant about to match their protest. I have 4 kids, if I found that I had funded such stupidity, I would pull that rug pretty quickly
It moments like these you need minto.
Maxxx,
Are you saying that anyone who has a problem with certain excesses of capitalism must first discard their tents, ttake all their clothes off and eat nuts and berries before they can be taken seriously?
That's illogical. It's the same as telling the Tea Party their opinions about limited government don't mean shit because they drove on a state highway to attend a protest.
easy to casually dismiss this movement by criticising the messangers, the message is however extremely relevant! If you have children is it not a concern to you that because of the property pumped ponzi scheme promoted by banks ,they will never own their own home. The older generation have selfishly swallowed the greedy american dream perpetuated by indebtedness.
. . . all very amusing but don't scoff these people off. They are drones for a highly organized global left movement hellbent on the radical transformation of western society and the destruction of capitalism. Things in the USA are going to take a turn for the worse very soon.
When I visited the protest site they were busy formulating an Occupational, Safety & Health policy. Occupational is used as they are professional occupiers. Their concern was that people must not go barefoot as they might be in danger if they were to use escalators in bare feet. This seemed so different from the anti Viet Nam protests that I had seen some forty years ago.
Its moments like these you need the Red Squad: 'move, move, move...'
Who are they harming, apart from your sensibilities?
"Finally, I'm fairly sure that most protests are fueled by rage, in this case" .. Alex Alex Alex, good grief
Cactus you boring old nana, let the hippies have some fun..!! Besides, if people like them didnt get up to this sort of stuff then you'd have nothing to complain about which means you mite have to say nothing - which I'm sure you'd find an impossibility
:)
More like - it's moments like these you need Minto Sticks
A large amount of us are simply away because of exams an during the day most of us have work... (numbers seem low because most people work one to two jobs..) an the views on cannabis are only supported by the daktor protestors there...
as it is a movement with no leaders we can not control who puts up their own views but the main message is how the banks helpd f##k the ecconomy.. by being unregulated by the goverment its not corprate greed but greed in general by people in power...

To 2.03pm, the only ponzi scheme is the welfare state.
Great post Cactus.
Kate, it's interesting that you've chosen a very selective array of photos which along with your blog perpetuate the idea that this occupation is not well supported and that the majority of people there are unemployed and/or stoned students.
Your piece of writing does a great job at supporting this idea, but I feel that it's really misleading and does not provide an accurate representation of what is actually going on in Aotea Square.
If anyone is interested to check out this protest, or if the writer herself would like to further look into this issue, I'd suggest to come to one of the 6pm daily meetings which are usually attended by around 100 people. This number ballons over the weekends when the meetings are held at 4.30pm Saturday and Sunday.
Granted, there are not always 100+ people staying overnight, but that is due to the fact that the majority of people on this occupation are engaged in full or part time work and/or have families to look after.
I am very suspicious of Kate's claims that one of our security guard's wanted her to buy them alcohol and I find the rhetoric about people being stoned and/or using drugs on the site absolutely ludicrous and defamatory.
It would be great to see anyone who really wants to observe this movement in action at one of the daily meetings. This is where you will see the most people, see what the protest and occupation is about and see the whole process in action.
Cheers
Ray
Ray
I provided a photo of the guy asking around to get alcohol. He said he was on security as he was jumping a hoola hoop. If he wants to sue me for defamation, then fucking bring it but how is that going to go? As he jumped the hoop his pants fell down as he giggled. How old was he? A schoolkid?
I didn't see any drugs and made that perfectly clear, I saw the effects of drugs on people long or short term. That is an observation.
So you organise an occupation but are now handing out times that people should come and see the numbers swell to 100 then? Isn't an occupation actually meant you are to occupy? Not drop-in when you feel like?
I would like to point out the ranting right wing BS first of all. Its of no suprise that Cactus Kate has nothing useful to say -as we all know her neo conservative ideals are also in this arena. Its interesting that you attack the things that you dont understand -But yet again standard practice for some one of your ilk,. Gross and sweeping generalisatioons aside... You have missed the point. totally. I suggest that you drown your self in your ficticous world of the self(ish) and get a clue. Many of us have jobs and are not "hippies"
I my self work at a high level in the media industry there are business owners , full time workers in all areas of commerce, I.T ,Sales And Marketing and service industries that are regular in their attendence and habitation of OUR space.
I suggest the stench you spoke of is of your rotten ideals along with the stench of Death of the past you cling too so grimly and not of the flowering humanity and positive frameworks that help the wider and complete membership of the 99%.. Face it kate.... your time has come... your ideals and world view , sad and jaundice as it is is no different to the toxic tide washing up along our eastern beaches.Yet Unlike the current adminerstration, we have a soloution , or at least are working on one.. Whats your solutipon?. wheres your global movement... thats right there isnt one... If you would like further recourse and discussion . I invite you to come down and have a debate with us at our GA I would gladly sit with you, and not have "Stoned Inbred fluttering eyes" as I look into your callous hearty and tear your ideology to bits. Feel free to arrange a meeting with me at anytime Content@occupyauckland.org
Bit snarky cos no-one recognised you? I would have! Your sour pervades even after a shower!
Obviously dear Kate, either got to wrong place after a snort of something else for lunch and then thought she had better run along & take some pics to 'act' like she had, tossing her blonde hair for all it was worth.....
Careful, your Lemony snickets 'ego' is showing, but Act so irrelevant now have only answered cos it is occasionally amusing to answer those with an agenda with a mirror method! Your snarling divisive rhetoric
is exactly what lost short-man syndrome John Banks the Mayoralty incidentally, so carry on regardless..You two are actually the best recommendations for voluntary sterilisations amongst the 1% and their lackeys,so if Act are looking for a new Sponsor there's an idea for you, as I don't imagine the Bretheren too fond of Don right now.
Perhaps you should have stayed in Hongkong, the smell of the poor there obviously didnt worry you too much but you may surely get a sore nose with all that disdainful sniffing here.. Comedic reading but highly unimaginative photo tagging. If that's best you have, boy are you over-rated..
What a moron provoacteur this sycophant is. Cactus Kate and this 'Jenny' must be the dumbest tossers of all time, unable to think in any rational manner. They probably both slept with Milton Friedman and the best that can be said of him is that is dead. Then, having a qualifcation in, what was it?, marketing is hardly an education.
Nothing but a right wing cyber goon.
Your comments to Ray at 3.29 remind of Key trying to deflect questions about the Standard and Poors debacle - your approach is so misleading it's less than a short step to lying. Someone who's got the time and energy to waste on you should compare what you said in the blog to what you said to Ray. I've seen behavior like this from you before. It's not becoming.
Firstly, you said "It's fine to provide weed to be smoked outside before arriving, but walking through the space drove me to drink and this was alcohol free."
Apart from the sentence being grammatically nonsensical (and being an example of why I think you cannot write, but that's just an observation) you used the word "but" after referring to your opinion that it's okay for 'someone', presumably members of the Occupy group, "to provide weed to be smoked outside before arriving", before going on to say "[but] walking through the space drove me to drink and this was alcohol free." Like I said, you make no sense, but the clear inference is that you saw someone either handing out pot or smoking it, somewhere, and that had some kind of an effect on you i.e. it "drove you to drink". But then you say to Ray "I didn't see any drugs and made that perfectly clear, I saw the effects of drugs on people long or short term. That is an observation." Well, if you didn't see any drugs, what "drove you to drink", whether literally or figuratively, because something must have. Was it your "observation" of "the effects of drugs on people long or short term"?
This young topless man (his pants fell down part way through a hoola hoop movement) asked me if I was over 20 and could go buy some alcohol.
Good post Cactus , Awsome!!!.
Loved it.Sooo funny.
Stupid commie fools and hippocrite's as well.
Laugh Out LOUD!!
9.43pm What is your point? Paragraphing and numbering assists if you wish to communicate with me such that I can give you direct answers.
Hey to everyone here. I'd just like to add a brief point about the guy in the photo - the one who asked you for alcohol.
I have a tent set up at the protest and have been staying there for the past two weeks.
I recognise the guy in the photo, and though I won't say his name, it's pretty safe to assume that most of us want him gone. He's very very strange, he's creepy towards the women and he drinks alone in his tent. He also pees in coke bottles and leaves them lying around.
I like literally everyone who's a part of the protest, but I'd love for that guy to disappear. He's causing problems and discomfort for people, and clearly a negative portrayal by the media too.
We're a very well organised group, and I feel we have been represented wrongly by a lot of the media coverage I've seen. The cause is a great one, and personally, I'm going to continue Occupying no matter what. Living in Aotea Square is one of the best things I have done in my life - it's been life changing, not only for me, but for everyone involved. I'm absolutely proud to be a part of it.
NZ isn’t a constitutional republic but it is the next best thing a democracy.
Reading the above thank Christ for democracy. Democracy helps keeps NZ safe from these 100 clowns who are reduced to turning out for a late afternoon circle jerk.
Good grief, the great unwashed really are hilarious. Coupled with the sad anger laced responses on this blog we really are witnessing something truly pointless.
Leeches. Allergic to jobs. Bludgers. Whatever you want to call them. They need to be hit with reality sharp and hard. If I wanted to go to this campsite I'd be easy to notice as I'd be the one with the giant peg on my nose.
Ariados
Why don't you have a vote then and boot the prick out?
Or hold hands, hum and then politely ask him to leave?
It's like Phil Goff, everyone was too polite to tell him to leave and look where that is getting Labour?
Well, well. This post got under some skins, Cactus.
is there any room at ACT for Phill Goff...thats where broken down poliies go to die isn't it?
CK@12.40am - Yes, didn't realise I'd posted it. Got halfway through and thought I'd finish it later.
My point, put briefly, is that your response to Ray shows that you have pretty much lied in your post. Just have a look again at what you said in the post and what people would be left with after reading it, and then compare that with what you said back to Ray. It's at best misleading, at worst deceitful. The circumstances suggest the latter is more likely.
2.08am - bullshit. I visited the site and wrote down my observations. Occupy activists have had all day to log-in on their computers when they go home to avoid the light pollution and have published their nonsense which I have allowed as comments.
2.08's right - in your response to Ray you contradict what you say in your post. For example, you say you were asked to buy alcohol for under-ages, then in your response to Ray you say you weren't. What's interesting, though (and others here have noticed the same thing) is that this type of communication seems to reflect your modus operandi. It's my observation that people say you're smart and sharp and "acerbic" because you've duped them with combinations of words come across as flashy statements, but that if you examine more closely are often at best close to meaningless, and at worst plain lies. I've seen people here and elsewhere try to engage in debate with you, but you almost invariably revert to either even more flashy meaninglessness, personal attacks or a combination of both. Others have made the same observation. Why do you do this? Why do you recoil into total defence mode whenever anyone ever says anything that even remotely challenges what you say? Your response to Ray, I have to say, really is complete and utter bullshit. Go look at it again - it really is.
Bullshit. Let us use your one example and I will go through it.
You said:
"For example, you say you were asked to buy alcohol for under-ages, then in your response to Ray you say you weren't".
NO I DIDN'T
I have gone through my responses to Ray on that topic. Here are cut pastes of my comments relating to, I wrote:
"I provided a photo of the guy asking around to get alcohol. He said he was on security as he was jumping a hoola hoop".
That is the only comment section remark I made about the guy asking for the alcohol.
Ariados then CONFIRMED the guy was doing such and provided more information about him!!!
Get your facts right before even commenting here or I will just hit delete. Writing long comments full of bullshit that I have to waste my time addressing doesn't give you the right to use my forum.
Here's an interesting read:
