Pay Up

I am fully supportive of this campaign to get expats to front up and pay back their student loans. Despite the sanctimonious clap-trap from the man behind it, given his campaign forced itself to have a Maori name and all....HEKE....come on.....Maori aren't the ones that are targeted here being under-represented in tertiary education and not exactly known for rampant OE's as a group. Those not paying the loans back are generally middle-class, white (or Asian), mobile and fleeing.

Despite many students from days past not having received any INTEREST FREE loans and then hit with having to pay FROM THE SECOND THEY STARTED EARNING A CENT.....

Peter Dunne chimes in of course with more mutterings of utter uselessness.

Revenue Minister Peter Dunne congratulated Sir Paul on his campaign. "There's a basic intolerance among New Zealanders for people they see as not paying back their loans ... what Sir Paul is doing is simply reflecting that."

Well students ARE NOT PAYING INTEREST on their loans currently and this should no longer be tolerated with such large bills to pay.

Perhaps at that point expats will feel that they are being treated more fairly and comply. Many overseas owe very large sums because of interest accumulated while they were studying and when they were in New Zealand on low paid areas of work. Most have the attitude now that why should they pay the debt back when the government in New Zealand has bailed out and paid off all sorts of other people's debts. Not to mention given preferable treatment for current students.

Basically until the magic day that students are stopped at borders coming and going from New Zealand, handcuffed or slapped with a bill before they can exit New Zealand, then followed up with debt collection agencies overseas, they won't all comply.

I welcome that day.

I also welcome the day the current bunch of bludgers are slapped with market rates of interest from the second they drawdown the loan, even while studying - just like everyone else had to endure.

I also welcome the day that the government rebates all the interest accrued then paid from good honest people who have already paid their loans off in full and with the 7+% interest from the day of drawdown.

I imagine we will all be waiting more than a lifetime for even a thank you.

Remarkable how all you Tories are dead keen on working class Kiwis paying back student loans NOW (when you stamp your feet), rather than fund Christchurch's rebuild through an Oz style levy on higher income earners (who can afford it). Or by reversing the tax cuts that benefitted the rich so much.

That token million or two for Christchurch from rich listers really pales by comparison with the billions you are demanding from the peasants huh?

Oh, and your last demand:
"I also welcome the day that the government rebates all the interest accrued then paid from good honest people who have already paid their loans off in full and with the 7+% interest from the day of drawdown."

...is a lovely touch - scream for overseas grads to pay billions in interest free loans back.... so the cash can be backpaid to you for the interest you paid on your loan. Not for Christchurch at all. Classy. That was what you were asking for, right sweetie?

Mad Marxist.

Don't forget the baby boomers like Callaghan who got their whole education for nix. An even sweeter deal than interest free loans.

Don't forget retroactively charging baby boomers like Callaghan who basically got their entire education for nix; an even sweeter deal than an interest free loan to pay for your education is one you don't need at all.

I don't think it is a particularly good argument to pay your loan back at all - for Christchurch.

The much better argument is you signed a contract and adhere to the contract.

Of course governments have changed the contracts for some students and written off all their interest and not asked for more.

Back in his day only the elite actually went to University, most of the reason fees are so high now is that anyone can get in regardless of their capacity to earn a decent wage to pay back the loans.

Dear Dave

You have been my troll for a while now. I can safely say that I do like myself more than I like you.

And whatever you say about bloggers, trolling a blog is an indication that you are a hell of alot sadder and have far more self esteem issues than everyone here.

I guess some of these fools forgot they signed a contract with the crown when taking out these loans. Now any man and his dog can go to Uni to get a degree. For many it's a lifestyle that you're only to happy to draw down loans to pay for...only to cry about it when you're paying for your follies. No wonder these "marxists" (and I use that loosely because MM has never experienced marxism) have problems with personal responsibility.

"working class Kiwis"

This is the problem, they are not working. They go to university to get a BA in basket weaving and then moan when they cannot get work.

I have had staff work for me who in the past (when you could) used the student loan scheme as an ATM to go on holiday to Fiji.

interest on student loans should be pegged to the rate of inflation.
