In Defence of Keisha

Baby Baby

Little Whalerider herself, Keisha Castle-Hughes is knocked up at 16. So out comes another kind of knocker, those with politicised gems such as:

National MP Paula Bennett, a mother at 17, said whichever way you looked at the situation, 16 was far too young to have a baby. She believed there was no way a 16-year-old had the maturity to cope with the demands of raising a baby. "You should be worried about pimples, boyfriends and going out, not bringing up a child."

There will no doubt be more. All forgetting the special circumstances in this case, and the overriding concern that it's no one else's bloody business.

I say, so what? My rationale is the reasoning that you are old enough to do anything you want when you can afford to pay for it yourself. Paying in all respects: time, money and energy. I don't advocate youths taking drugs, drinking alcohol and getting knocked up, but if the taxpayer is not paying for it, then who the hell really cares? I don't.

Keisha earns a pretty good income for a 16 year old. She has travelled the world and appears wise beyond that of a normal 16 year old. She's been nominated for a Oscar. What may come as more of a surprise to those of you who read me regularly is that I actually realise that in life some women actually desire to have children. It's like - one of their goals and all.

To those who argue she is a bad rolemodel for young New Zealand kids, tell those little snotters that when they earn the sort of money Keisha does they can do whatever the hell they like with their lives. Til then Mum and Dad rule.

If parents can't get that into their kids heads then perhaps Keisha is not the problem, their own relationship with their own kids is.

A chick I went to high school with got knocked up in 7th form. Took a year off and then started law school the next year and is now employed.

Of course I also know far more girls who are probably still on the DPB back in west auckland after having a kid in their teens.

I suspect the ones that were going to go on to bigger and better things would have gone on to bigger and better things kid or not.

I think it all depends on the family support and the kid themselves.

While it is not ideal that 16 year olds are having babies, legally we allow them to have sex so surely a natural consequence of this is that some may become pregnant no matter how careful they are with birth control.

I don't think getting pregnant that young is the end of the world to be honest, I am quite liberal about it. There are plenty of solo parents who survive in life without living the pinup existence that we are supposed to have, go to University get a good job, get married THEN have kids and live happily ever after.

Just (as with every other age of parents) don't expect the State to pay for it when you do get pregnant.

Damn right- if they can pick up the tab- no problem.

I only get on my high horse when they want to use MY money for their dumb choices!

And that is the point that so many leftist's miss - the issue isn't with 16 year olds getting "knocked up" - it is with 16 year olds getting knocked up and relying on others to do the bringing up...

Stellez

It's always good to have visitors to my blog who proudly claim English as their second language. Even better to have underage visitors. I trust you enjoy the swear words that I use liberally.

What language are youse speaking here? Is it teentext?

Seriously though - stay in school and please don't have sex until you are old enough to pay for condoms.

I refer you to my recent post on orgasms. There may be some useful tips there for you.

Bloody hell, Kate. It's bad enough that you're my alter-ego. It's bloody shameless for you to invent commenters to your blog such as Stellaz.
